College Football Bowls Announced

The FBS bowl schedule has been announced today. This bowl schedule doesn’t get me too excited, but has some good matchups. Focusing on the BCS bowls, I have a few comments for each bowl:

Fiesta Bowl – TCU v. Boise State

I don’t think that pairing the two non-BCS conference teams against each other is the best matchup. Sure, they are both good programs having a good year. But the goal is to put them up against the big guys and see how they do. I pick TCU over the Broncos here.

Orange Bowl – Iowa v. Georgia Tech

This matchup is okay, I’ll pick Georgia Tech in a close one. Iowa had a great season, but Stanzi’s health is the critical stat. We don’t yet know what level he will be at for this game.

Rose Bowl – Ohio State v. Oregon

Either the PAC-10 became really weak or Oregon is really good this year. Possibly a little of both, can be going on. With all of the weapons in their offensive arsenal, that side of the ball is good. The question is their defense and special teams. I pick Ohio State by 10 points or less (typical Tressel ball).

Sugar Bowl – Florida v. Cincinnati

Yes, Florida was really smeared in the SEC championship game by a solid Alabama team but don’t count them out for the count. Cincinnati has a soft defense that Tebow will have no problem checking out. UF over the Bearcats in this one.

BCS Championship game – Alabama v. Texas

Texas shows that against a tough defense, that they can make mistakes and sputter offensively. Alabama’s speed on defense will deliver the same pressure they faced against Nebraska. Roll Tide.

The other bowls are not entirely interesting. I see a few mismatches, but it seems a number of 6-6 teams didn’t make it in this year’s pairings. Here are my picks for the rest of the litter:

New Mexico – Fresno St. v. Wyoming: Fresno St.

St. Petersburg – Rutgers v. UCF: Rutgers

New Orleans – Southern Mississippi v. Middle Tennessee: Middle Tennessee
