Hitachi Data Systems Adaptable Modular Storage 2100 and 2300 Updates

Last week when I was at Hitachi Data Systems’ inaugural HDS Geek Day 0.9, one of the embargoed nuggets of information we were provided was an update to the Adaptable Modular Storage 2100 and 2300 series. The AMS 2000 series also includes a 2500 controller, which is unchanged with today’s news other than receiving the new RAID chip (mentioned later).

The AMS 2000 series is the ‘lowest’ offering in the HDS portfolio, as most of their products are targeted for very large and demanding storage requirements. I took particular interest to the AMS 2000 series as it can apply to most of the storage environments that I work with.

The AMS 2100 and 2300 have a few new features, outlined below:

  • Additional host interface ports on the 2100 and 2300 controllers, including dual personality. The new 2100 and 2300 series will allow an optional I/O controller module that will permit up to 8 fibre channel ports at 8 Gb/s. This I/O controller can also add 4 iSCSI ports at 1 Gb/s. During our briefing, I was quite surprised that a  10 Gigabit Ethernet option is not available for this module considering where we are in time. It is definitely on the roadmap and will be somewhat easy to address as it is a separate I/O controller module but is not available today. To be fair, HDS are not seeing a large amount of demand for 10 Gigabit Ethernet as I am told. The 2100 was at 4 Gb/s for its fibre channel connectivity, and with the new release will be available at 8 Gb/s for both the onboard interfaces and additional I/O controller ports.
  • New RAID controller chip. I don’t have too much detail on it other than  it provides improved sequential performance for RAID arrays and is available on the 2100, 2300 and 2500. Coincidentally, the new 2100 and 2300 controllers are referred to as a 2100 rev2 and 2300 rev2. Side note, check my recent blog post on RAID 6 in favor of RAID 5 nowadays.
  • More dense disk configurations per 4U shelf. A single shelf can hold up to 38 SAS or 48 SATA II disks in a 4U enclosure. Each drive type (SAS/SATA) has the same interface footprint, but the SATA drives require less power and have heat exhaust in the enclosure. Competitively speaking, I know we can deliver 24 drives in 2U on another platform. So this isn’t entirely unique for getting a number of drives in an amount of rack units.  See figure below showing this:

image The hard goods have enjoyed these new benefits with the rev2 edition of the AMS 2100 and 2300 storage systems. While not new to these updated products, HDS storage products have full blown virtualized storage. This includes volume migration, dynamic provisioning and a literal buffet of storage software offerings.

You may have noticed that my content is shifting towards storage a bit. This is partly a reflection of my professional responsibilities as well as opportunities for blogging. I’ll keep more content coming!

  1. Are you sure it is a new RAID controller chip in the Rev 2 and not just a firmware update to fix the RAID5 and RAID6 bug present (~30% perf) in Rev 1 ?

  2. Erik: It is a new chip as I was informed. There are other hardware components involved, primarily to enable the additional I/O controller.

  3. I’m from Hitachi and each of the models in the AMS2000 family includes a new RAID controller chip that was designed to improve performance in sequential modes as compared to our rev 1 versions of these controllers. There was no software bug that required a fix.
